Yep. I always crack up about how these folks pull the “BUT MY FREE SPEECH!!!” when they get called out on bigotry, but will be more than happy to exercise their free speech when being bigots.

But see, I admit I’m guilty of the opposite sentiment. I was proud of Oreos & JC Penney & Target for publicizing their support of gay rights but disappointed & angered by Chick Fil A’s. But then again, there is a big difference in voicing civil rights & acceptance compared to bigotry & ignorance.

Incoming rant, and this isn’t against smalltownbeatnik, it reminded me of something I read yesterday.
There is no equivalence because of what these stands represent.
Oreo was saying they support a specific group of people (in this case homosexuals) having the same rights that everyone else enjoys - the right to marry their partner and have all the legal benefits that come with doing so.
On the other side, we have Chick-fil-A who is supporting keeping/taking away rights from that same group of individuals. They say they are supporting this oppression of rights because of a religious belief. A religious belief that not even everyone under their particular religion holds.
It goes beyond an opinion and goes into the realm of actually oppressing people.
Yesterday, I saw quite a few “asks” show up on my dash where people were saying things like, “Well aren’t you just as bad as the people who wanted to boycott Oreo because of their support of gay rights.” and it boggles my mind.
It boggles my mind that we’ve developed this “culture of equivalency” that acts like being ‘against’ something is equal across the board.
These people can’t tell the difference between support for giving the same rights to everyone, which in this case wouldn’t affect anyone except those who are offended by it. It doesn’t actually oppress or hurt anyone, it just pisses off people who would rather enjoy more rights at the cost of a huge swath of people not having those rights simply because “they don’t like it”.
I have a very hard time understanding how people can’t comprehend this concept, how they don’t understanding the difference between the two sides.
