Apparently they’re letting Santorum speak at the RNC…

stfusexists:

…really? So has the GOP just completely given up on pretending they give one half a crap about voting women or people of color? I guess that honesty is a refreshing change for them.

Remember that time Rick Santorum had to catch himself because he almost called the president the n-word …

Full Hitler quote “”Secular schools can never be tolerated because such schools have no religious instruction, and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith …we need believing people. “
It does sound a bit eerily similar….
“But [what] about religious youngsters who find themselves in a public school hermetically sealed off from all religious influences? Would not the school, and therefore the government, tacitly be communicating to religious youngsters that prayer, religion, and faith are not really welcome in America’s public square? That is where we have ended up: Court-sanctioned hostility to religious influence in American society, all in the name of neutrality.” — Rick Santorum

That awkward moment when Rick Santorum does the invoking of Godwin’s law all on his own.

rhrealitycheck:

The right wing Republican politicians who have been denouncing the requirement that female employees have access to birth control as part of their health benefits as an attack on religious freedom completely ignore the church teachings they don’t agree with. Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich are both Catholics, and wear their faith on their sleeves, but they are hypocritical in picking and choosing when they wish to listen to the bishops.

1. So for instance, Pope John Paul II was against anyone going to war against Iraq I think you’ll find thatRick Santorum managed to ignore that Catholic teaching.

2.The Conference of Catholic Bishops requires that health care be provided to all Americans. I.e., Rick Santorum’s opposition to universal health care is a betrayal of the Catholic faith he is always trumpeting.

3. The Catholic Church opposes the death penalty for criminals in almost all situations. (Santorum largely supports executions.)

4. The US Conference of Bishops has urged that the federal minimum wage be increased, for the working poor. Santorum in the Senate repeatedly voted against the minimum wage.

5. The bishops want welfare for all needy families, saying “We reiterate our call for a minimum national welfare benefit that will permit children and their parents to live in dignity. A decent society will not balance its budget on the backs of poor children.” Santorum is a critic of welfare.

6. The US bishops say that “the basic rights of workers must be respected–the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions…”. Santorum, who used to be supportive of unions in the 1990s, has now, predictably, turned against them.

7. Catholic bishops demand the withdrawal of Israel from Palestinian territories occupied in 1967. Rick Santorum denies that there are any Palestinians, so I guess he doesn’t agree with the bishops on that one.

8. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops ripped into Arizona’s law on treatment of immigrants, Cardinal Roger Mahony characterized Arizona’s S.B. 1070 as “the country’s most retrogressive, mean-spirited, and useless anti-immigrant law,” saying it is based on “totally flawed reasoning: that immigrants come to our country to rob, plunder, and consume public resources.” He even suggested that the law is a harbinger of an American Nazism! Santorum attacks ‘anchor babies’ or the provision of any services to children of illegal immigrants born and brought up in the US.

9. The Bishops have urged that illegal immigrants not be treated as criminals and that their contribution to this country be recognized.

10. The US Conference of Bishops has denounced, as has the Pope, the Bush idea of ‘preventive war’, and has come out against an attack on Iran in the absence of a real and present threat of an Iranian assault on the US. In contrast, Santorum wants to play Slim Pickens in Dr. Strangelove and ride the rocket down on Isfahan himself.

Can you say hypocrite?  I knew you could.

One of the biggest “things” that get me about people like Santorum (besides how utterly vile they are) is their hypocrisy.

They want to act like beacons of morality and religiosity and then don’t even follow their own fucking religion that they use as an excuse to be oppressive, hateful, dickbags.

Really? Are you people Serious? One is a terrorist, the other a strongly religious man. No I do not agree with his ideas and options but to post something so… so idiotic. There is a fucking difference, stop hating on Christianity and complaining about them being ‘bigoted’ and ‘narrow minded’ if you’re going to be so stupid as to post something like this.

That didn’t take long, I knew there would be someone who would reply like this.
Stupid, huh?
You realize that while bin Laden was a terrorist to us, he was a devoutly religious man and believed that religion should rule over secular law. He was a hero to many on “his side”
What is so “stupid” about drawing a parallel. What’s “stupid” is jumping to an immediate conclusion without looking at the point the picture is making.
It doesn’t say that Rick Santorum is the same as bin Laden, it says that he holds the same belief that religion should rule over secular law.
This basically a reminder that this is always dangerous, even within Christianity there are disagreements about how to interpret the bible, what morals to follow and how. Christianity is terribly splintered.
Rick Santorum not only wants to push religious beliefs into law, he wants to push his particular brand of religious beliefs. Listen to his statements about sexuality and contraception.
Not everyone is the same religion as him, hell, not everyone is the same kind of Christian he is. A lot of people don’t hold these same beliefs about sex.
He’s not just a “deeply religious person”. He doesn’t believe contraception should be used. He doesn’t believe people should have sex unless it’s for procreation. He wants to outlaw abortion. Add to this his disgusting position on gays and gay rights.
Of course someone who doesn’t step back and think about the implications of outlawing contraceptives, or even making them difficult to obtain is going to think this comparison was stupid.
What if the rest of the US had restrictive abortion laws that many conservative states have or are trying to have pushed through.
Anyone who doesn’t see how his stance on these things are downright un-american and dangerous is being extremely narrow minded and not looking at this from all angles.
While the man isn’t a terrorist, some of his pro-life supporters sure as hell don’t see a problem with what amounts to terrorist acts on abortion providers and the gay community.
The man is an extremist. His views on contraception and sex are extreme views he would like to see everyone else follow, that if he had his way, everyone else would be forced to follow.

Pwned

I seriously fucking hate when people make these bullshit comparisons.  People were doing the same thing during the 2008 presidential elections because Obama has amazing charisma.
Oh, well Hitler had great charisma too!  OoooooohOOOHOHhoohohohhooh OBAMA IS A NAZI.
No, you’re just a fucking idiot with no background in politics.  You’re the same person saying Obama was a communist.
These comparisons are apples and oranges.  Santorum is just an ignorant, misogynistic anti-life fundamentalist but he’s not out strapping bombs to children.  Well, not yet, but still.  He’s just another person that believes church and state should meld together, congrats.
Osama is a completely different story, and if you think that they are the same type of people you are out of your mind and you should maybe open up a book and get your head out of news network’s assholes.
GOD, why the FUCK are these people allowed to type?  I hope they get anxiety and don’t speak up during debates so that nobody has to hear their nonsense.
But in all honesty, if Santorum’s little tour bus flips, I’m not going to be too heartbroken.  Just saying.

Way to miss the point entirely, or did you even read my previous post explaining why this comparison was being made.
If you can’t tell the difference in drawing parallels between charisma - a simple personality trait (in the Obama/Hitler example) and an ideology of not keeping religion and government separate (as in the example in the picture) then you’re the one with a problem.

Is it time to go into panic mode yet?

murphysbride:

Do not underestimate Rick Santorum. He has a powerful wind at his back. His journey from homophobic Internet-joke to the top of the Republican field is being propelled, in part, by his tapping into a deep longing for a simpler, less technological time. [If you are not in on the Internet-joke, please click the link]. Whether by design or by accident, Santorum is capitalizing on our collective exhaustion from living in an ever-changing technologically-mediated future. The future has become our now and, well, lots of people are not so impressed. Truth be told, some are pretty tired of the whole thing. By being the anti-science, anti-progress candidate, by showing he too suffers from our collective “future shock,” Santorum has made “santorum” work for him.

The contrast with recent Democratic presidents could not be more striking. Clinton, like the Fleetwood Mac song that animated the first campaign, never wanted to stop thinking about tomorrow. And today Obama is all about tomorrow: “hope and change,” “winning the future,” an American economy “built to last.”

But Santorum’s campaign is in the past tense. The poetry of his campaign is to fight for an America that used to be. He’s a self-described “champion of traditional American values” with “The Courage to Fight for America.” And if that’s not enough, as stated on his campaign web-page, all you have to do is “donate $100 or more using the form below, and we will send you an official Rick Santorum For President sweater vest. Perfect for demonstrating solidarity with true conservatives.” No fashion-forward thinking here, let’s dress like it’s the 50s! And in doing so change the tense of American politics from the future to the past.

Of course, a campaign built on the appeal of “sweater vest culture” would not work at all were it not for one thing: The future is not turning out to be as amazing as we were told it was going to be, despite having all the next great things. Everything is faster, just not better.

This is the kind of shit that I have nightmares about.

This guy is fucking dangerous.

Everyone thought G.W. Bush was a joke back in 99/2000 too, and he was president for 8 years…

Maureen Dowd from NYTimes takes a shit on Santorum, calling him Senator Sanitarium, a ‘small-town Mullah’

marmoulak:

A great and hilarious article by the New York Times columnist Maureen Down about Santorum’s religious fanaticism.

Rick Santorum has been called a latter-day Savonarola.

That’s far too grand. He’s more like a small-town mullah.

“Satan has his sights on the United States of America,” the conservative presidential candidate warned in 2008. “Satan is attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that has so deeply rooted in the American tradition.”

When, in heaven’s name, did sensuality become a vice? Next he’ll be banning Barry White.

[…]

Mullah Rick, who has turned prayer into a career move, told ABC News’s Jake Tapper that he disagreed with the 1965 Supreme Court decision striking down a ban on contraception. And, in October, he insisted that contraception is “not O.K. It’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.”

Senator Sanitarium, as he was once dubbed on “The Sopranos,” sometimes tries to temper his retrogressive sermons so as not to drive away independent and Republican women who like to work, see their kids taught by professionals and wear Victoria’s Secret.

“When, in heaven’s name, did sensuality become a vice?”

That’s awesome!

Santorum Takes Climate Change Denial To A Biblical Level
Climate change denial has become a litmus test for modern Republicans, but Rick Santorum, in his fondness for melding faith and government, has become one of the precious few to cite the Bible as evidence that the science-accepting crowd has it all wrong — and apparently the first to bring that thinking to the presidential stage.
“We were put on this Earth as creatures of God to have dominion over the Earth, to use it wisely and steward it wisely, but for our benefit not for the Earth’s benefit,” Santorum told a Colorado crowd earlier this month.
He went on to call climate change “an absolute travesty of scientific research that was motivated by those who, in my opinion, saw this as an opportunity to create a panic and a crisis for government to be able to step in and even more greatly control your life.”

Rick Santorum: President Barack Obama’s agenda “a phony ‘theology’… based [not] on the Bible… [but] a different theology.”

Santorum ‘Theology’ Quip a Sign of Fear-Based GOP Politics

On Saturday Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum tossed a healthy portion of old but still-red meat right into the ravenous, foaming mouths of the rabid right when he told a Tea Party crowd in Columbus, Ohio that President Barack Obama’s agenda was “a phony ‘theology’… based [not] on the Bible… [but] a different theology.” (emphasis mine).

In so doing, he got what he wanted and needed — headlines and an appearance on a Sunday morning talk show. But he also tipped his hand on how he intends to run the “anyone-but-Romney” GOP primary and general election this fall: by playing to the irrational suspicions and stoking the unfounded fears of the least savory elements of the GOP base.

The key word in his controversial statement is “different.” One could reasonably conclude his meaning to be “other theology” or even, by extension, “The Other.” Painting Obama as “different” has been the primary directive of conservatives for over four years and it’s more of the same thinly veiled xenophobia and Manchurian-candidate nonsense we’ve come to expect from fear-fomenting Republican politicians. Has the GOP become so intellectually bankrupt, so bereft of tenable principles and viable policies that the “Grand Old Party” must resort to rehashing the 2008 whisper campaign that President Obama is not a Christian? It’s trite and vapid and would be outrageous if it just weren’t so pitiably absurd.
